“WannaCry” was the latest attack hitting major businesses all over Europe and North America in months past. This particular virus used a flaw in Microsoft’s software, to spread rapidly across networks locking away files. Ransomware, which demands payment after launching a cyber attack, has become a rising trend among hackers looking for a quick payout.
What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is a type of malicious cyber attack involving hackers taking control of your computer systems and data while blocking any access until a ransom is paid. In order to gain access, hackers usually send attacks through email, websites etc. to gain access to your network.

What to do if You’re a Victim- Should you Pay Ransom?
Victims of ransomware attacks are advised NEVER to pay the ransom as it only encourages the attackers. Even if ransom is paid, you are not guaranteed that your files will be returned. This virus often demands Bitcoins (1 Bitcoin = $2391.00 CAD), a digital currency that is popular among cyber-criminals because it is unregulated and impossible to trace.
How to Protect Yourself Against Potential Attacks
The best protection against ransomware attacks is to have all files backed up on a completely separate system or using Cloud backup. This way if you are attacked by ransomware, your data will still be safe. AntiVirus software can protect your machine, although cyber-ciminals are constantly working on new ways to override such protection.
